Hi. I just joined the forum. I've been a proud owner of this fan that I bought from an antique store about 25 years ago. I've kept it running, but have always wondered about the grease in the gearbox. Is it supposed to be full of grease, or just enough to turn through the gears? Also when it gets warm, a bit of greasy oil will trickle down the oscillator shaft. Is there a way to stop it? Maybe a different lubricant?

Rick, welcome to the forum.  Clean out the old grease well and refill, just to cover the gears enough.  Maybe 1/2 or so full.  I use a multipurpose grease.  I think your fan may have either too much or the wrong lube in it.

Thank you, Steve. That is what I've been doing, and using multipurpose grease. Maybe I should clean out the grease every year instead of every other year?

The grease should not need to be changed in your lifetime, much less every few years!

What would be a good grease that won't run down the oscillator shaft?

I use Valvoline Automotive and Industrial General Multipurpose Grease for non-disc brake wheel bearings.  From my local auto store.

This was a guess on my part on what to use and I have no experience using the fan or two I put it in.  Any comments on my choice from other members?
