I picked up a nice Westinghouse sidewinder ceiling fan. It's pretty early ("Pittsburg" with no "h" on the motor tag dates it to around 1909). I believe I was the first to open her up - very neat wiring. One of the stator wires went up the down rod with only one splice at the coil wire.

The owner had actually oiled it, too much actually, causing an overflow and an oil film on the wiring that collected a lot of dust. This may have protected it. The insulation is in great shape. It has a 3-speed switch, but 2 and 3 are jumpered together and there is a single-speed (2-wire) speed coil.

The paint is a bit rough, so I'm stripping it down. I plan to do a copper oxide, with black in the recesses and copper on the high parts of the cast pattern. Something like this fan that Vintage Fans did:

I'm picking up another fan this weekend and plan on copper oxiding it, too. I will sell one or both when I'm done. I have one set of good original blades and plan on making one or two new sets from oak, walnut, or mahogany.

Nice find! Show us pictures when you are done! I have a matched pair of "Pittsburg" Westy Sidewinders I bought at an antique store a few years back. The serial #'s are close enough that I think the two fans have been together since new. Both had all the original wiring, even the braided 2-conductor inside the hanger pipes.

Tony - I've got two and only need one. I'm going to try to get one finished and take it to Tim Mark's meet next Saturday. I'll have about $450 + labor invested. I'm going to do an oxided copper finish. It should look really good on this fan cus of all the texture and relief on the castings. It came with a good set of blades, too. I picked up a snap switch. Not an off-high-low switch; it will just switch between high and low.

I was going to assemble it and offer it for sale at Tim's, but now I wonder if someone would want to buy it as fully prepared kit and assemble it themself.

I'm driving up from SC to PA and you being VA, we could meet if you're interested.

Sweet David, Glad you will be at Tim's meet. Looking forward to meeting you and I would love to look at your Sidewinder Fan (Sadly can't buy a CF yet).

Just happy to get to meet you!

People could afford ceiling fans if they would just stop paying $4,000 for old dragon phone booth fans. :D

The dragon fan is off topic, but a sweet fan. The picture is from another collector's web site. I always liked this fan.

The copper oxide is looking good. I did a light media blast and wiped with acetone, then dipped in liver of sulphur, sloshing each part around for about 40 seconds.

Thanks. If I don't have any issues, I'll take it to Tim's PA meet and hopefully send it off to a new home with someone.

The switch is a 2-way wall switch. If someone has a spare 2- or 3-speed switch, let me know. I only use one set of contacts to go between high and low. On/off is via the wall switch. Maybe it will get better after it gets some time on it, but it won't start in low without a push. The switch body is about 1/4" larger than the correct switch, but it fits. The hole-to-hole centers were about .2" too far spread out to match the tapped holes in the stator, so I took a 1/8" burr on a die grinder and ovaled the holes out in the ceramic switch base. It worked and is sturdy, but an 1/8" thick round adapter plate with two through holes to match the stator and two tapped holes to match the switch would be a cleaner solution.

Congrats David. I know it is sad to let go of a fan but hopefully the money in your pocket helps out.

I enjoyed working on them, and I probably made 10 cents/hour working them.  I may celebrate with a night out at Taco Bell.

New white oak blades, but the rest of the fan is very original. I didn't replace any wiring - it was in very good shape. It puts out a strong breeze.

Thanks. I figure that after expenses, I made about $3.50/hour. Makes up for the money I lost on the last one. :P  I enjoy working on fans because I can learn how they were made and I can respect the engineers and designers from long ago. Plus there's a little thrill when you finish assembly, turn them on and they start to spin.  These old fans have a soul. Makes you wish they could tell their story.
