I re-wound one of my many Emerson Fern Leaf ceiling fans as it was not working. When power was applied, the stator did not agnetize. Now it works on 220V 50Hz and still has a good starting torque and runs at the expected 200 RPM What weight of oil and how much oil should be used in the oil cup ?

Use a 20wt non-detergent oil, such at Zoom Spout or 3-in-1 blue bottle (not black). Add oil, run it for a while, then check the level with a U-shaped wire. The goal is to have the oil as high as possible without overflowing. You want the thrust bearing to be submerged and the bottom of the rotor in oil so its spiral groove can pump oil up through the bearing to tor top. It should take about 1/2 of a 3-in-1 bottle.
