I recently found this Westinghouse 16" Brass Fan #164851 in the basement of an old antique shop. I am in need of one cage strut as shown in the photo's. Does anyone know where I might be able to find such an animal? Looking over the AFCA forums I believe this fan was built 8-18-1913. The fan is all original with original cord and plug as well. And best of all. IT WORKS! I offered 25 bucks for it and they accepted my offer. I hope I didn't get ripped off. I would also like to find the shaft that holds the cage strut in place but in the mean time I was able to purchase a replacement at the hardware store. My plan is to replace the frayed original cord with an antique copper one purchased from Vintage Wire and Supply along with the bottom felt as well. I am NOT a professional restorer of such things so I only plan to replace the essential things to get it up and running. I'm not sure if I should attempt to clean the brass with some lemon and baking soda or just let it go. I've also heard that using WD-40 on the base can also clean up the muck and grime accumulated over the years. Any and all suggestions appreciated. UPDATE: Nope that build date is incorrect. It has the 5-15-11 micro date with 525 preceding it so it must have been built before 1913.       Last edited on Sun Nov 14th, 2021 02:45 pm by Frank Weiser |

Wondering if this fan is considered a "Tank" version? And the fan blades look as if they have a varnished coating over them. Still OK to polish?

Not a tank. Next generation of stamped steel. Tanks are just a nickname but, generally, typified by large blocky motor housings that weigh like a tank. If you want to polish to a high gloss, you’ll need to clear the lacquer coating first. The blades look very nice and I don’t know that they were mirror finish to begin with.

I don't want to remove the lacquer finish. What do you recommend I use for cleaning?

 I’d use plain old wd40 and an eyeglass cloth. Don’t want to go with anything that’ll scratch it. Here’s a side by side of a Westy tank housing and a Westy stamped housing. Tank is on the left.

You have a "drawn steel" Westy or stamped steel as most call it. Made from 1912 onward through the 1920s at least. See if there is a date stamp on the back of one of your fan's blades like below.Not sure about the two dates but my fan was probably MADE in 1911 for the 1912 season as it is the first year model of stamped steel fans (1912). Here is most of what you need to know about Westinghouse "tanks" made 1905-1911- https://earlyfans.blogspot.com/2011/03/westinghouse-tank-1905-1911.html  Check with antiquefanparts.com for parts. You'll need one strut with clip and screws for the clip and strut. I forget if there are washers to go on the screws. The brass blade would have had a lacquer on it which may still be intact and, if so, i would advise to not strip and polish. Try cleaning with WD-40. on a rag and leave it at that. The cage was not polished brass but was "dipped and lacquered". For very authentic old fan wiring contact Tony Clayton. He is a Westinghouse collector and will be able to provide the most original wiring made on he antique wiring machine.  Here is my all original, unpolished early Westy stamped steel. As far as a strut goes, did you check with Darryl Hudson or Chad Baker’s stores? Also, Darryl has struts in the BST section. Or did as of yesterday.

Nope unfortunately I don't see any stamped number on the back of the blades. Thanks for the WD-40 suggestion. I'm going to clean it up nice and display it.

Well I found the strut clip on antiquefanparts.com so I've got that ordered. Unfortunately they don't have a strut in stock for a 16" westinghouse fan.

And Darryl’s BST is at https://www.afcaforum.com/forum2/64472.html. It’s for a bunch of struts to include a set that looks to be for a 16”. Might see if he’s sold them. If not, never hurts to ask if he’d just sell the one set separate.
