Hello all,
I’m new to this forum but have been collecting and restoring fans for a few years now. I have a 16” Emerson model 73648 that was restored a few years ago but recently stopped working. The fan suddenly has no power at all and just hums unless the blades are started by hand. I disassembled, cleaned and lubed the motor but there was no change. I am fairly certain that the issue is with the switch/coil because the fan spins freely and there is no difference with or without the oscillator installed. All of the wiring was replaced during the restoration. Does anyone have a good coil/switch assembly that they would be willing to sell? A restored one would be ideal. I have a quote for $130 to rebuild my switch but there is a long wait and I would prefer to buy a rebuilt coil and keep mine to restore as a spare later on. Thanks!

If your fan has one of the old "sardine can" capacitors in the base, that is likely the problem and should be replaced.

Hi Noah, thanks for your reply. I’m not familiar with the difference between the sardine can style that you’re referring to VS the style that it should be replaced with. I thought my existing coil could simply be rewound or replaced with a good working original. Would you mind posting a photo to show what you mean? Thanks

Does the number 73648 have any suffix such as 73648-AK? if so, it should have a capacitor.

I found this picture that was recently posted on the forum. The capacitor is the "sardine can" in the right of the picture with the two wires attached.

Okay I’m pretty sure mine doesn’t have that part but I will double check when I’m back home. The model number doesn’t have any suffix.
