I'm trying to find any available information about a small tabletop fan, probably dated around 1900, made by Ideal. I don't see that manufacturer listed in the Galleries section of this website, either in the American or non-American fan listings, and I can't find any information on other websites. The fan is black, about 10" across, with four blades, and "Ideal" in black script on a red background in the very middle of the blade cage. It was probably purchased in one of these locations: West Virginia, New Mexico, Alaska, or Canada, in the early 1900s. I'd appreciate any help.

I have never heard of this fan but I will definitely keep my eyes out. If it is all black with no brass, my guess is it would be from the 20's. Do you have pictures of the fan? I am guessing you own it. Paging the patent God, Russ? On a side note, if you do have pictures of the fan, maybe we could identify it as a rebranded fan. It definitely is possible. Most likely made in the mid to late teens before WW1 by Tidemann Electric Co. (TEMCO) in Cairo , Illlnois. Hope this helps , if fan has an ID plate rivited to it , check if readable & see if I'm on track. Of course if it's an Ideal cage on another fan makers fan , we would likely need to see a picture of it .![]()

Tideman supposedly sold out Menominee Electric and left Oct. 10, 1919 and moved to Cairo. In a contract agreement with he and the new owners, the new owners of Menominee Electric(Signal) could not produce fans for a 5 year period. This information is on Darryl Hudson's website with Menominee contributions credited to Steve Cunningham, Loren Haroldson, and Mike Breedlove. If all this be fact, all the fans from Cairo, Il. would of been produced from 19-25 before Signal kicked in making fans. Not sure how long TEMCO(Cairo) was producing fans beyond 25? http://k8ir.com/signal/1922Article.htm Attached Image (viewed 1289 times): Last edited on Sun Oct 4th, 2009 11:07 pm by Russ Huber |

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply. It took me a while to take the photos. The fan belongs to my aunt, who has asked me to help her sell it and some other old belongings. You're exactly right: the fan IS made by TEMCO. I didn't even see the nameplate until you told me to look for it. I'm attaching a close-up, which shows that underneath the black blades there may be some brass lurking. But I'm hesitant to try to clean it and possibly ruin the finish. Thank you so much--and to Russ Huber--for your help! - Jen Attached Image (viewed 1251 times):

Jennifer, can you please give the serial number off the tag that you read TEMCO from? It should be a 5 or 6 digit number. Thank You! ![]() Last edited on Sun Nov 1st, 2009 08:22 am by Russ Huber |

Thank you Jennifer. So far based on what I've seen so far the Ideal badged Tideman Cairo fans have TEMCO on the tag as opposed to the earlier?....Menominee badged Tideman Electric tagged fans. ![]()

Being Loren stated Tideman pulled out of Cairo around 27-28,I wonder if the Cairo fan serials even got close to the 300,000 mark? A reminder Tideman left Menominee in Oct. of 19 to take his chair at Cairo. ![]()
