So I broke this R&M 2203 down to clean almost a hundred years of yuck. I wanted to test a piece to see how it might turn out. I spent about an hour working the base. Now I understand what you guys are talking about. The original Japanning is stunning. It is black black black. I LOVE THIS FINISH!

Craig, that looks stunning.  Do you have some before photos of the fan?  I have a couple of nice original but dirty stamped steel R&Ms.  I also wonder if the paint on any stamped steel fans is japan or might be a lacquer or other paint but not japan.  I see japan on all sorts of cast iron items but not on steel.

It was damaged during shipping (still looking for someone who can repair it's wing)

It is a 110VDC "from NY city". I wired it temporarily using the Radio Shack bridge rectifier. Made sure she would run before disassembly.

My only problem is the "busted wing". I want someone to do it right, this survivor will be stunning.

I remember that fan now Craig; it was in exceptionally nice condition paint wise. I think you may be able to find a replacement blade easier than having yours repaired.

Steve,  I agree. What is the chances that there is one in the lot of storage locker fans you have? I'm glad you saved them. I am sorry to hear about your friend.

You might check with Dennis Lebow as he got most of the parts and junkier fans from me from Bill's estate fans.  I kept almost no parts but do have some R&M stumps and/or parts fans but also lacking some blades.  Haven't had time to really check them out yet.  Not an easy task to get over 150 fans ready to sell and that's just to make them look presentable.  As I go I will learn more.

Craig,

What technique did you use for cleaning the paint?  I think if I'd done the job using my usual methods I'd have rubbed out the pinstripes, but yours came thru with flying colors, so to speak.  Do you have any pointers for me??  Thanks.

I could use some pointers too Craig.  My R&Ms that have a nice original finish also happen to be dirty and I don't want to rub the dirt into the paint and make scratches.

Wow, that cleaned up nice!!!

The stamped R&M's didn't use Japan. On a Japan finish you can go right at it with lacquer thinner and it wont damage the finish. On the stamped fans you can rub the paint off with thinner, so my guess is they were painted in lacquer.

Great fan, hope you find a blade and get her back on the road!

There is a spray cleaner at work called "Selig super cleanup II" it is similar to 409. I used a toothbrush and scrubbed it liberally. I then used Meguiar's cleaner wax (this is the key). STAY AWAY FROM THE STRIPES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!!! I had to go over each area several times. I agree, this is probably lacquer paint. After the first time, I saw cloudiness/blushy looking areas. Went over that area again and WOW! Each time I look at the application area of the cheesecloth I was using to make sure it wasn't taking off paint (make sure it isn't black). Be prepared, this is very time consuming and is a lot of work but I am amazed at how well it comes out. I know there are probably other better ways to do it (clay bar) and I might try that next time. I DID LOSE SOME OF THE PIN STRIPING. This was minimal but has to be expected as they are on top of the original finish and are almost a hundred years old. Thank y'all for the compliments, I will continue to show/tell how it comes together.

I did the struts last night.

Thanks Craig, you've done an outstanding job on that fan and I appreciate your info on your method.  I'm going to give it a try and hope I can get even 75% of your results.

I opened the motor and the field coil tape was really brittle, ugh. I did not see this coming. I removed the coils and rewrapped them, soldered new head wire, and cleaned/waxed for hours. Cleaned up rotor and hardware and put her back together.

I hope to get the switch and speed coil cleaned up and then solder in the bridge rectifier and line wire tonight. Before pic of switch...

Got her running... Only new paint is on the cage. New head wire, repurposed line wire, added bridge rectifier, new tape on field coils, new wicks and oil...EVERYTHING else is original.

Old fan in an aircraft hangar. I am surprised how quiet and smooth these DC fans run. It doesn't vibrate much at all. I "massaged" the wing the best I could by hand so I would not leave any tool marks.

I cleaned the brass but decided to let it keep it's patina. I want to thank everyone here for helping me complete my first fan. Your knowledge and encouragement is priceless.
