Mike, I love these things. From the looks of it "today" has no exclusive rights to stupid and we can put to rest the "kids today are too dumb to be careful" meme and accept the fact that there's a little danger in the wind machines we all own.

1904 - This was a terrible tragedy, almost 600 people died in the Iroquis Theater in Chicago, Illinois during a show of the play Blue Beard. The fire was believed to be started from heat from a stage light igniting oiled stage ropes, so the curtains and drapery along the walls of the theater went up in minutes. The exit to the front entrance was cut off in an inferno, and the emergency exits were chained shut. The ventilation fan for the theater did too good of a job in that it pumped outdoor air into the flames, acting like a power bellows throughout the theater ventilation system, literally turning the theater into a furnace. You can imagine with that many people in such a situation, people were reduced to acting in sheer terror fighting for their lives. When the flames were doused, the police had to guard the dead after discovering crooks posing as corpsmen removing the deceased were actually looting the bodies...

It may have been this fire or another, but the exit doors of the theater opened inwards. As people were starting to flee, the crowd behind the people at the doors were pressing so hard the doors couldn't be opened to get people out. Later, all exit doors had to open outwards to avoid this.
