Finally got into a GE 506836 BMY thats been sitting around the shop for a couple of years and I need some advice on cleaning the windings. I mean they are filthy! What is everyone using to get this dried up hardened crud of the windings? I think the pictures will say it all. I'd like to clean it before I change the headwires.Thanks.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() I hope these are not issues for you. They look suspicious to me. I clean my stators with a high pressure wand with ordinary paint thinner I buy at the Ace Hardware. They come out looking pretty nice. Let them sit in the sun for a day to purge the solvent. Cheers, Bill

I saw the bald spot and I've yet to investigate. The thread you found is just that... one of the threads wrapping the insulation around the stator. It scared me to!!! Thanks bill. Paint thinner I have plenty of.

Home Depot sells it and I assume Amazon, you can liberally spray the stator until it runs through the windings without harm. Just let it dry thoroughly before varnishing. I usually wait a couple of days so it can dry deep in the windings. I’ve found that while cheaper, even the odorless mineral spirits can leave an odor when you run the fan and the coils heat up a little. And it’s flammable unlike Lectra Clean. Just don’t breathe the Lectra clean as you’re spraying it, and wear gloves. Lastly, the cloth that’s rubbed off IS the magnet wire insulation, and not some sort of coil covering, so be sure to varnish that stator after you clean it. Early coil wires didn’t have the lacquer or epoxy insulation that modern magnet wire has, they used a silk insulation to prevent shorts. Last edited on Mon Nov 11th, 2019 10:30 am by Lane Shirey |

I vote for Lectra Clean. It is available in most auto parts stores. As another resort, mineral spirits works well, especially if you douche it good with clear spray varnish afterwards. Keep putting the motor varnish on until it quits soaking in. That may take several days, letting it dry between douches. Stoving the stator at 200 in the oven speeds it along. YMMV

I use nothing more than a paint brush & compressed air (GENTLY!). It's just not worth the risk of dissolving something that shouldn't be! It will be inside the motor housing, and just not that visible. (On some old stators, the dirt may be the only thing insulating the turns from one another.) The red insulating varnish is fine, but just remember it doesn't fix a stator with any kind of short. It's really just "paint"! ~Sparky~
