Hello! I ordered an old Westinghouse sidewinder ceiling fan and unfortunately the original speed control was damaged in shipping! According to the seller the bearings and windings are good (though I plan to revarnish them) and the wiring off the stator will need replacing. This is my first time doing my own repairs on an antique fan, and I’m at a loss as to how to fix the speed control issue. What kind of capacitor would I need to replace the speed coil with? Or would the original speed coil work with a modern pull chain switch? Also, would anyone happen to know what gauge the wire in the motor is? These fans used 3-speed switches wired for two speeds. I think it was High-High-Low-Off. these switches are very hard to find and expensive ($150) if you do find one. Your best bet is to mount a more common On-Off type pull chain switch that you can find NOS on eBay. You might need to oval the two mounting holes in the switch porcelain or make an adaptor plate. You can wire the switch to turn the fan on/off or as high/low, turning the fan on/off at the wall. I recommend installing a KB speed control at the wall. This gives great control over the speed and lets you slow it way down. Attached Image (viewed 210 times):

I’ve got nothing substantive to add as David H is one of the resident experts in ceiling fans and, more generally, electrical. I would say as you work on this project you probably want to be posting on our new site as this one is set to go dormant and there will be no new additions to discussion threads - at least that’s my understanding.
