How does everyone restore their ID tags? I heard paint entire tag then carefully wet sand till brass lettering shows through?

I have never restored a tag because I get fans with good original tags.  I believe that tags were not painted in most cases but had an oxide treatment of some sort.Below is a 1905 GE pancake tag from a fan in wonderful original condition.    The four tags above are from good original 1904 pancakes.   I see no evidence of paint having been applied to the tags.   Also, there is no paint in any of the stamped numbers as you will so often see on "restored" tags.

I use a method described on this forum some time ago. A black sharpie pen. Buff the tag first, then paint the low areas with the black sharpie, then buff the high areas, leaving the black ink. On tags with very little relief, I do not know.
