the stators are impossible to remove on these so you will probably get the motor and casing, there are several different variations of the Vortalex so posting a pic would be helpful:up:

As Lewis said, there were different variations of the vortalex. The earliest fans had a capacitor motor (the brown and beige variety) then there was the shaded pole 6 pole motors in the 50's (teal and grey),then they had a shaded pole 6'pole with the speed taps in the motor (and a 4 wire headwire). A pic of the fan would be very helpful, along with how many conductors the headwire has. Also what size is this fan? I've got a 16" shaded pole motor with the 4 wire headwire on a parts stump.

Lewis, can't believe I forgot those. The earliest vortex ( the 1939 12" 3 wing) had the shaded pole motor from the quiet blade. As far as the later black and polished fans (1940-1943? ( I think)) I'm pretty sure those were capacitor motors.

its shorted out

EDIT: it never worked QUITE right when i got it its high speed was a slow gentle brese eventually the motor locked up andwhen trying to change head wire and work with very short splices the heat wire broke off some where back in the motor  im shure its not a bad speed coil because  i hooked it up to straight 120 v bypassing the coil and it was the same thing:cry:

EDIT: if anyone has pictures of this fan restored please do not hesatate to post them..

that sounds like it may have just desperately needed oil, motors don't lock up because they burn out, they lock up because the bearings are gummed up and dry, and i know of others that have retrieved broken leads from the motor, you may try that, someone here will know more.

the blade turns freely by hand and how would i get the stator out to replace the headwire (it goes in in the back) is it possiple that the motor is just very very weak and cannot turn the blade???? because the blade does turn freely by hand when i had oiled it before i replaced the grease in the gear box and filled the oil cup 1/3 full of 20 weight nondetergent oil i use zoomspout...

that's something i don't know. they are fairly common fans though so you could probably find one easily, but, judging the condition of your fan, it may be better just as a parts fan and find another one, i'd say if the motor was good it would be worth repairing, but since it does seem your motor's gone you should probably just find a fan in better condition.

i know what you mean, my cake right now is kinda like your vortalex, needs many parts, and probably isn't economically sensible, and other members have tried talking me out of fixing it and using it for parts instead, but foolishly i'm sticking with my plan:hammer: considering that is what you're doing with your Vortalex, the original paint color would have been "frost grey" as GE called it, someone probably knows of a source for this or a similar color, good luck:up:,
Lewis

it may just desperately need oil, or it may indeed be getting caught on the cage and the seller doesn't know what thir talking about, go out and take a look at it, that's the best way:up:

Hi Joseph, I just found a 16 inch GE Vortalex, in the original beige color with the carrying handle and other parts intact. Like yours, the power cord is shot and I'm replacing it, along with cleaning and oiling it.  If it works fine, I'd be happy to sell it to you cheaply. (if not, I'll have a parts fan like you!) If you're interested, I'll keep you up to date on when/if it works with the new cord.

those tan one's are really nice, plus capacitor start motors, run cooler, they have lots of brass accents, and they look nicer:D:up: (this is a 12 inch, but you get the idea:D
