Here's a very nice GE 16" nickel plated fan with nickel plated brass cage. Plating is very nice on it for it's age.Would clean up to a super shine with some polish. Headwire has some tape on it but can easily be replaced which I can supply .Runs and oscillates great on all 3 speeds.This is a very hard to come by fan especially in this nice of shape. Sold!! I know what your saying Ron. Times are tough . Fans in general are just not brining what they are worth or used to be worth anymore unless they are on ebay and then the buyers will blow them out of the water..I have into this fan just what I am asking for it now from the bouckville antiqe show last summer. Better off parting them out. I don't think I'm going to buy anymore for quite awhile no matter the rarity.

Nickel or Chrome? It looks more like chrome to me and, by 1930, chrome was in common use for many applications.

I don't know for sure but it shines either way.I didn't think chrome came out untill 1934 but I don't know for a fact.

Chrome was first used commercially on the 1926 Oldsmobile. Ford was using chrome starting with the 1928 Model As on all bumpers but still nickel on many other parts of the car such as radiator shell and instrument panel, etc. Nickel has a generally warmer color than your GE fan.

I would deal with the cage first. It's just not reasonable to think that they would put a brass cage on a late AOU like that. Someone must have a catalog listing of it. If anything, I would bet that the cage is nickel and the rest of the fan is chrome. The two metals do appear different in a side-by-side comparison.

Chromium was used for electroplating as early as 1848, but this use only became widespread with the development of an improved process in 1924. CHROMIUM Although it doesn't state that Nickel plating was discontinued when Chrome became available. Again, if someone has proof in writing from GE stating they discontinued Nickel plating on a certain date and there after only chrome plated......and or have a degree in Metallurgy who's to know? Most companies were quick to switch because chrome plating is much more durable (it's physically harder), is not an allergen, and has a clearer shine. Nickel tends to be relatively dull and yellow. And just where might have you read that most companies changed over quickly to Chrome plating? I believe that is your assumption unless you can come up with some legitimate proof sir.

Most likely chrome because the ones like this I have seen have been chrome. In person it's easy for me to tell chrome from nickel. Compare the Star-Rite above with this fan and then Charlie's GE which appears to be chrome plated. Attached Image (viewed 976 times):

Well, I definitively found out that it is chrome plate and the guard (!) is correct. The model of that fan is 75425CP... couldn't somebody have connected CP to... Chrome Plate?  .Apparently, it was also one of the first fans to have the trumpet base.
