I found a GE Collar oscillator for sale. They are asking $700 for it. What would be a fair price for it? Looks like it is in good working condition. Thanks for any info.

I would make sure 100% that it works properly, I think $700 is about twice what it's worth. If it has gear problems that can be a big problem, most of them do have worn gear problems.

if the gears are original and not bad and it has the other bits and pieces like right blades, cage tag etc. I could see it going for close to 400 or a bit more BUT you have to know those gears are OK because that will cost ya.
with no guarantee, 250.00 to 300

Years ago, Vin McMaster did a story for The Fan Collector called "Working On The Dreaded Collar Oscillator". You can buy past issues from Jim Daggs.

I know some might scream sacrilege but it's just a matter of stripping it and repainting it if one likes it BLACK. I felt the fan is unique and has character, so accenting that would be nice since it needed new paint anyway!

Tony I've seen that fan on CL for a while already, I dont think the seller is going to lower his price. I would pass on that fan unless you can get it for under $250.00

Mike, looks great!

For those who asked the collar gears are going well. I'm finishing up a Kidney nightmare that I got myself into plus I get married next weekend so my time has been limited.

The gears arrived though and look great, I just need some time to put it all together. I also have to fabricate the shoulder screws used in the collar because mine came with none. I have to fabricate the linkage as well.

WOW your was naked pretty bad shape, a perfect example of how bad it can be.

Now I really feel lucky to have gotten one that actually looks like it will work.

Question did this fan come with or without a handle? Mine has no holes for a handle to screw on and had no handle when I got it, yet the patent shows a handle:

LOL that is funny can't wait to buy a Fan from Frank, if that where ever a reality, NOT!

He's in love with GE, I think he must have stock from the turn of the century he wants to liquidate one day! Most likely found in the base of an old GE no doubt!

Who knows what they do to keep those things running! Worthless stock stuffed in there might help keep the speed coil from falling apart. I mean, like what else would it be good for!

Mike L-

I just realized that it looks like that was the fan that went up on ebay a bit ago! Did you have any luck finding a new cage? Did it come with blades? What's your plan for getting her fully up and going? Also, will you paint the pot metal front bearing housing?

Aaaaaaaa  glad to see that comment and you are right you did see it a while back, I took a huge risk and paid more than what I should, I only got lucky that the gears where fine, only seized because the gear was not oiled and the head wire was not connected correctly. fixed both and it ran fine.

Cage yes looking for a cage, I can steal one from another 3 star fan I have but would like to find one, Blade? I'll be looking for as well other wise I can steal one from the 3 stars I have. There have been several cages come up and blades come up so not too worried I can find one so that OK.

The Question: "will you paint the pot metal front bearing housing?"  It is!!!! already With Epoxy stainless steel so it looks somewhat natural as the Pot metal. I had to rebuild the outer edge of the front cover completely and with a lot of effort and patience because it was all chipped off from folks trying to pop it off with a screw driver.  You can see the chips in the original pic.

NOTE: NEVER USE A SCREW DRIVER TO TRY AND POP OFF THE FRONT COVER!!!!!

Tap it out from behind carefully.

I plan on just buffing the wing nut and the two shoulder screws that hold the front cover on so it has a Metal look and feel to it. I'll just clear coat them afterwards, If I could have done the front cover like that I would have but it needed to be built up so had to paint it like stainless steel. I did another like this and it looked awesome, in fact its the little fan to the left of the fan on the table. The Base mechanics are all buffed steel with clear coat on them.

Just some details I thing will set it off a bit. Make it stand out.
