Hello All,

I am new to the hobby and have just started restoration of my second vintage fan.  A GE Vortalex.  Upon testing i found that my fan does not oscillate.  I took everything apart to start restoration and found that the oscillator gear is chewed up.  This is the one that that the main shaft worm, mates to and spins the oscillator.  If anyone has a parts fan they want to sell, or maybe just the gear in question i would be much obliged ;) I have included a pic as well as link to my dropbox where i put a few pics of the fan in question.  Below are the details;

GE Vortalex table fan
3 Blade
Cat #FM10V1
Spec: 272917-1

Any help would be great.  I really like this fan and would like to see it fully operational.

Ron

You should be able to use the entire back off of any of those "square" gearbox, 10" GE fans. There were several different versions using that motor, so a donor is more available than you may think. This was a common problem on these fans, however, so be sure to check the condition.

Still on the lookout,  Any 10" GE gearbox could work I'm told.

I have the same issue as well. My oscillator box is missing the last gear that connects with the oscillating crank shaft.

Jay, yours is a 12" or 16" fan motor and it has a different, and sturdier, gearbox than the 10" GEs which are kind of an oddball and not used on too many different GEs.  Yours won't work for Ron's fan.  The 10" Quiet Blade and Vortys are two that used that motor/gearbox.

Bummer. So just to verify, the box nor inside gears will interchange?

Weak,  So am i to understand that this is hard to come by?  Not super exciting.  I really like this fan.  From the pic u posted jay it looks like housing and the gearbox are 2 pieces on your fan.  on mine they are one piece.

The 10" oscillators seem to be much less common than either the 12/16" or 8-1/2" oscillators.  I would think the inside parts would be smaller than the 12/16" parts.  But what about the 8-1/2" parts?  I have no idea.

The 10" gearbox is cast integrally with the rear motor plate; only the top cover is a separate part.  The 10" fans are not rare but not all over the place either.  I've had a number of the 10" models but their gearbox/osciiation seems to be on the flimsy side or so I have heard.

I'm lucky enough to have a real survivor that seems to have seen very little use. I'm still very mindful to keep it from binding and keeping it will lubed.

arghhh... let me have your gear ;) Nice looking fan. Is that the original color? As you can see from my post, mine was kinda chestnut colored. Interesting to see such a different look.

GE fiddled with their colors every few years as they slowly cheapened their fans.  The sea green or whatever it's called is a nice looking color.  I think that I prefer the 1946-48 tan ones however and the fans were still not cheapened in a meaningful way.

That is original everything except the grease in the gearbox. Someone was kind enough to cut the end off the cord before shipping it to me "for safety reasons" when I bought it, but I had an old GE replacement plug, so I don't really feel too bad. I've had it a while, but I don't think I ever posted it. I have no idea how that happened...

Ron, have you ever found that gear for your FM 10v1
Vortalex? I am in the same situation!

If Ron doesn't want it, I will take and pay for it?

I think I have a complete fan that I'd be willing to sell to whoever is interested. I'd be interested in selling it as a whole. It's unrestored, but I'll make sure it works if anyone is interested. Sorry, but I don't have just the gear. Please PM me if interested. Thanks.

Ron, are you still needing the worm gear?  If so, I will be on the look out for you.  I am close to the Fan Man in Garland, Tx.  I'll ask him also to watch.

Hey guys, been MIA for a bit, back in town now and back to my fanning.   :P
Just finished off a project 12" Westinghouse that I started about 3 years ago, very happy with the outcome.

Wanted to bump this thread, I'm still trying to find this gear.  If anyone has one they are willing to part with I will compensate.

THANKS

Ron

I have one I probably won't need until I send it to you, provide me with your address and I'll send it to you.
