Ok. So I've absolutely caught fan fever. I've fallen in love with this one in particular. But I'm becoming discuraged because every one I see online is nearly equal to 2 months of car payments for me. Is there any chance I could get one even in ruff (but restorable) shape for under 100 dollars?

I have to go to fanfair now and save my pennies. Thanks for the info Steve. I just wanted to make sure I have realistic expectations. I saw the one on ebay STARTING at 500 and nearly got sick. Do many guys sell these at fanfair?

In the past year or so many STARTING prices on fans have risen two or threefold.  That may be due to there now being no listing fees on ebay so sellers just start high and wait for the right hungry buyer.  Fanfair will totally amaze you with the number of fans and the great deals on some fans.  There has to be a fan or a half dozen fans for every attendee.   This year we visit for much of a day our Fan Museum at Fanimation.  Not to be missed and you live close enough to ride your bike there.  Well, you live much closer than I do.
Don't expect to find a 6 wing Emerson for close to $100 at Fanfair but you never know.  Start saving up for a more expensive Emmy 6 wing, any will do as they are all nice fans.   If you can't afford too many expensive fans that's good; a smaller higher grade collection is better than a lot of cheaper fan.  Isn't it???  Plan to be at Fanfair the first day for setup from around noon on Wed.  Saturday about 9-9:30 PM the meet is over.  The trading room (Borse) is open almost all the time we are at the host hotel from 8 am to sometimes past midnight.  Can't beat that.  There were some very nice fans selling for $20-50 at last years fan fair including some 6 wing 77646 models although those kind of prices are not the norm.

I paid around $300 for my 6-brass wing Emerson last year. It was hard for me to decide on a nice 6-winger since there were so many fans to choose from at the fan meet! I like having choices, though.

The only other 6-wing brass bladed fan I've got so far is a 1911 Westinghouse with the stamped steel motor housing. I paid a little over $200 for that fan a few years ago, although I think I got a good deal on it for that price. FYI, I was still a dirt poor college student at the time and nearly emptied my checking account to buy my Westinghouse.

Brad, just ask around on the BST section and see what happens. A couple of years ago I bought a couple of 6 blade Emersons for $200 each. They are my favorite fans and typically sell quickly on eBay.  Good luck!

Brad - this fan has you written all over it, someplace under the two layers of paint. Take it apart, sandblast it, repaint it, polish the brass. Currently on eBay.

If you do buy it, experiment to see what takes the paint off - maybe lacquer thinner. Depends of the type of paint. Then, be very gentle with the cage badge. Also, the old japanning paint that Emerson used is almost like a ceramic. If it is still good (no big rust areas) you can reveal the original finish. I sand blasted one, then spent two weeks painting it with spray can lacquer, letting it dry several days then wet sanding between coats.

Brad, bidding early will give others an incentive to bid the fan up.  If you want to have a better chance of winning the fan at the least money you will snipe it in the last seconds.  You have to bid the maximum you are willing to pay and you still may not win it.  Sniping is the way most smart bidders do it.

For what it's worth, I can't afford these fans either yet I've managed to score two of them.

The first is actually a 77648 that I found on ebay as a frankenfan for less than 100$. I fabricated a brass cage for it. All I need is a 71666 motor badge and a correct cage badge and it will be complete. It will never be anything but a frankenfan, but I don't care; it's not for sale.
The other one I got in exchange for a fair bit of fan work. I still can't help but feel that I got the better of the deal. I'm rather infatuated with this fan in every respect.I don't have many fully authentic antique fans and this is the best of the ones I have. I invested 90$ in a set of wings plus wiring and paint, which I've done myself.
Cheers,
Bill

Bill, I love your fans. In some respects I would like to know it the back of my mind that I have the real deal 100 year old American masterpiece. But it's not critical to me. I'm not really in this for the money or to have investments or to have a home museum - but rather to have pieces I like and use. Preserving American history and giving a nod to the past can easily be done with a franken fan. It's the embodiment of what makes our history so cool! That an everyday guy can maintain and keep a fan working for a LIFETIME. and not just throw it away when the plastic gears give out. Thank you for you post!

For the record your fan is no earlier than a 1912 model, the first year for the Westy stamped steel fans.  1911 were still their tank fans.

I forgot to mention that both of these fans get a lot of use. They are both ideal for household daily use with good separation of speeds. Low is what I use mostly. It's just right with low noise and nice air flow. Other Emersons especially the 16 inch ones are for larger areas such as factories, theaters, etc. Not great for indoor home use.
Cheers,
Bill

I bought three Emerson 6 wingers this weekend at Aiken. I paid a lot more than $100 for each of them though. :wondering:

Aiken was filled with six bladed Emersons this year. Geoff had about 4 or 5 for sale on his table a long with a couple scattered around on other tables. Unfortunately none of them were under 100 bucks but a member did haggle a guy down to 175 on a project 24666.

I cleaned up the 16666 yesterday and it came out even better than I thought it would. I think its better to pay more up front for a good fan than to buy one with a lot of issues that has to be restored. However, if you cant afford a clean one then restoration is the only way to go.

Charles just happened to notice you live about 30 minutes from me. I live in the wadsworth area. Anyway. I've reset my expectations for this purchase - if I I could find one for 100 dollars that'd be great but I just don't think that's going to happen. One recent auction I was bidding on had 1 blade missing but was in otherwise ok shape ended at $284.
A second auction I bid on had a 6 blade in real rough shape for 53. I bid all the way up to 150. It had 2 coats of paint covering the entire thing. With it being my first emerson restore project I'm simply not ready for that.
I'm just waiting for fanfare. Auctions aren't for me. I get too evolved and get angry when up bid.
My budget by then will be almost triple what it is right now.
And Charles yours cleaned up very well! I'd rather spend the money and not have to spend a day buffing the blades. I'm so excited for fanfair now.

You never know when one will pop up with a $100 BIN. Even though its hard to believe but members here have snagged 6 wing Emersons at incredibly low BIN prices. Two years ago I was lucky enough to purchase a 12666 project fan for about $80 BIN which retails for more then a grand. I would personally wait until FF14 comes around because thats where you are going to get a good price and you dont have to worry about ebay shipping problems.

Yeah... I mean unless its buy it now and I'm lucky enough to see it, I am just not going to mess around with eBay.

Thats pretty much the only time I ever use ebay. I never actually bid on normal auctions and just wait until rare fans pop up with bargain BIN prices.

Seems to me like the 71666 seems to go cheaper than the 24666 or the 29666, or around $200 or so.

Strangely, the 16" don't seem to sell for much more. The 73668 is a nice fan, very quiet and a whole lotta brass on it.

Some of the 71666's had steel wings. NOT collectible by some folks standards, but still a beauty in my opinion.
You should be able to snap one of those up for much less than the brass ones.
So,is it the brass or the six wings that make it desirable?
Bill

Russell Petta has a 73668 with steel blades thats done up in gloss black lacquer with chrome hardware. Its a beautiful sharp fan. I've considered looking trading my nice bb/sc version.

I have a 71666 sb/sc in the pile awaiting that treatment. I HIGHLY recommend picking up a steel blade version of these fans.

Well guys, I did it! Spent more than my original budget but what I got is precisely what I wanted. Went down the road a little to meet another AFCA member Where he showed me his stuff and had a 24666 for sale. I love it. Absolutely love it. The finish is original. i'd say around 90-95% . I am going to leave it just as it is. Its found a place in my office and I'm just going to enjoy it for a few weeks before I consider fine tuning everything and polishing the brass. Pics to come later this evening.

Don't worry though, we all feel your pain! And the 6 bladed Emmy's are nice fans... When you can walk by the missus with a fan in your hand or hands depending on quantity and convince her they were good deals and you can double your $$... Then my friend! You have become a master!! Stan Adams!!! passes out awards at Fan Fair for the masters. I think I am getting one this year!!:D Geo...
