I have a 19646 I would like to sell. It needs a new headwire and is currently in non working order because of that. One of the three wires going into the motor has broken . The switch is intact. The bakelite grommets are there and still look good. The paint on the motor is still good. The cage is still in good shape. The blades are not beaten up and seem to be in excellent shape. the paint on the base is peeling off and it will of course need a new cord as well.
Price is $175 plus shipping or free delivery to Fandango
SOLD

Is this gone Charles? That is a beautiful fan and an absolutely great price. Be a great next project for me to work on if it isn't sold.

To the best of my knowledge it is the correct cage and these fans should have come with either brass or steel. Also I believe the ones that had brass cages had cast hubs and the ones with steel cages had stamped hubs

Oh Ok. I have two and both of mine have the brass cages as well as the one in the photo gallery that's why I was wondering. I will have to check my blade hubs.

The later models had steel cages. This one has a cast hub however with a steel cage.

Doc Dunaway pointed out to me that most of the steel cage & cast hub have rounded lower ends on the blade like this one. Most of the brass cages had the blade squared off. The reason I say most is a have a 24 series with brass cage & rounded lower blade ends.

The 19xxx types spanned TWO series of oscillators, the 21 and 24xxx.  Steel cages came on the 19 and 24 for 1918.   The 19645 9" fan seems to have retained the cast hub till the end with steel cage but the 19646 had a stamped hub in 1918.  I don't know about the 16" model.

19644 (1914-15 or 16), 19645 (1916-19), 19646 (1914-18), 19648 (1914-18), 19666 (1914-17)  Swivel & Trunnion.  Steel cages in 1918.  Change from cast hub to stamped hub blade during production.

21645 ((1915-16),  21646 (1914-16),  21648 (1914-16),  21666 (1914-16)  Oscillator with new, third type of gearbox, last to use the step base.  Still cast hub blades.

24645 (1917-19),  24646 (1917-18),  24648 (1917-19),  24666 (1917-18),  24668 (1917-18)  Oscillator, new cone shaped base (except for 24645 which used step base with thicker bottom flange), steel cages c.1918.   Change from cast hub to stamped hub blade during production.

Steve: How did you come up with 1918? (Brass was used for the war effort?)

1918 appears to be the last year for the 19646 and 19646s appear with steel cages.  So do some 24646 models appear with steel cages as well as brass cages.  Since the 24646 was made for only two years it would seem logical that one year was brass cage and the other year had a steel cage.

26645 (1920-22),  26646 (1919-22),  26648 (1919-22)  Non-oscillator, modified cone base with felt base plate.  Steel cages from here on forward.

27645 (1920-22),  27646 (1919-22),  27666 (1919-22),  27648 (1919-22),  27668 (1920-22)  Oscillator

I'm satisfied that 1918 was the last year for the 19646.   Do you have any better info?

That's why I was asking if you had any proof - if you post a statement, I think you should be able to back it up with proof - NOT what you think, someone told me,  etc.  this has been a problem in the past. To answer your question, NO, I don't have any proof that its not 1918 or any other proof - since I do the Emerson Survey I would like to know.

I'm not sure how solid you guys would consider this info to be but according to Witts, 18 was the last Year and it also confirms other things being discussed on this thread

Here is my dating of Emerson brass blade fans:

http://earlyfans.blogspot.com/2011/07/dating-early-emerson-60-cycle-and-dc.html

Do I have proof for every date I have down?  No, but it's the best I can do with the information out there from some Emerson catalogs, information in our INFO section and some other sources.   I have asked for any corrections or better infromation and have received no more than maybe a peep.   Hopefully the dating is accurate; I want to hear it if is not.

There seem to be more 19s with brass cages (long tag, short tag, short tag with handle and brass cage (I think since the 21 came that way) then steel cage with handle.   Would each variation be for one year, 1915, 16, 17, and 18?  Good chance.   Proof.  Wish I had some but, in the meantime, I have to do the best I have to work with.

144000 is the number on my 19646 with steel cage.   Cages could have been changed but we really don't know do we?

I worked in a factory for a little over 20 years and I can tell you that those transition things happen. Sometimes its as simple a thing as they may not have gotten enough steel material in to make the new cages or some other supplier issues. They may have started using the steel cages and someone in the back room says "HEY" I found six dozen of these old style brass cages in a corner. Do you think they would throw them in the hopper or put them on the fans? At some point all of the old material is gone and then the transition is fully complete.
