I am working on restoring this fan and the steel blade I have is in awful shape and can not be salvaged, much less balanced. I don't think these came with brass blades, but I'd like one for it if I can find one. It has the pizza slice shaped blades, not the rounded ones like in the attached photo. If you have one please let me know what it might cost. May be too expensive to source a brass blade, but I'm just seeing if an 8" brass blade is in the price range I can afford for this little fan. Really make it pop and be unique from all the other Northwind 44B's. The shaft seems to be 3/16" or maybe just a hair smaller, doesn't look to be a full measurement on my calipers, but they aren't that precise anyways. Maybe someone can chime in and verify the size of the shaft on this model fan. I would also like to try to get a new set of brush caps for this fan since mine are in pretty bad shape. Hi Cory! Those were all steel blades... powder coating them brass looks very good... and you can get them custom made! Geo...

How about getting them plated? It would be cool to have correct blade but with look you want.

Plating is not something I want to invest in since I am doing this fan for as little money as possible. Platers charge a good bit. The one quote I got was $80 for a 12" blade, and the kits from Caswell are almost equally expensive. I haven't seen powdercoated brass George, but I have a love for real brass since you can work it till it shines like new. There is something about buffing and seeing the finished product that makes me all warm inside. LOL, and that shine, nothing like it. I prefer it to gold anyway. But yes, neither of these is really an option for me with the blade I have. It is ruined. The picture I have above is not my fan, only one I found online. You would have to rewing the blade I have, and that is not something I would like to do, nor do I know how. The easiest option is definitely finding a little blade that will fit, and if it can be made easy I'm all about it.

Hi Cory, I've always liked this series of Northwinds also, especially the A. My conflict was they don't look Emerson enough! Therefore I strayed from the factory, and did it the way I like. One of each of the originals in varying voltages. Attached Image (viewed 492 times):

I love it Bill! The black really looks a ton better and that's a great resto job. I think I can see the Northwind to the far left on the shelf has the pizza slice straight ended blades. Am I right? I wanted to make sure the ruined one I have was an original shape.

If your hub is true, that is what I would do. I would definitely stick with the unique blade and finish, but you'd better check with the Northwind Expert, GEORGE!

Cory, they do look good with brass wings and while you're at it you can radius them for more air flow. This is the 450, but I'm sure the same applies. John McComas figures these fan motors are under-utilized. But if it's a rare bird, perhaps you should keep it as close to factory spec as possible.Cheers,Bill

Cory, If you are trying to do this on a tight budget get your self a can of RUST-OLEUM METALLIC FINISH 7710 GOLD. It come close to brass . This is a floor lamp I put together for my wife the base has a brass skin on it and the pipe is just 1 1/2 well pipe painted with the above paint. She has her florescent magnifying lamp on it. Thanks Tony, They're simple and cheap. This is my basement and you start with eyebolts in the floor joist. I use rough sawn 1" walnut from my property for the shelves.

I've tried that before Charlie and it is some good stuff, but my blade is ruined so I figured I'd try to source a brass one before I settle for another steel one. Looking more and more though that I need to rewing it because of the blade's profile only being made that one year model, 44A

Learned this from Cory, I have never restored my 44A's and did not realize until Cory pointed it out that they have unique one piece brush holders. All of the other Northwinds have knurled caps for removal! Here is the one piece 44A; Attached Image (viewed 290 times):

Crazy isn't it Mr. Hoehn? I wonder which one Darryl Hudson makes for a reproduction, or if he makes both? I know that I really need new ones since the wires are so short coming out of them, but I might can make them work and fix the chips with some filler.
