I picked up a Westinghouse sidewinder (from Dick Zuehl - thanks Dick it runs smooth and quiet). Due to the location of the switch, is it possible to add a light kit? If so, does anyone out there have one for sale? Also, would I be better off installing a speed control from the wall? Does anyone know what year this would be from? Thanks

There are 4 holes in the front plate on your fan. This is where you mount lights on your fan.

They made them with 4 light holes and 12 light holes. Here is a pic of one with 12 light holes with lights. Also this person added 4 extra wings but the number of lights on this one is correct. Mine has the 12 light holes but I have not put lights on it yet.

While some manufacturers did supply lights, most were fitters for 4 or 6 inch globes. The local supplier would happily supply lights for an upcharge. There are plenty of historical (and not so old) light installations on CFs. Here is one of the things you can hang from a CF. Thanks Tom. I thought the location of the speed control would limit my options. Would it be possible to remove the speed control on the bottom of the fan, install a light kit and use a wall mounted speed control?

But think about how often you will be changing the speeds on the fan. If you are like me I just set it where I like and really don't mess with it much at all after that. You can leave the switch in there add 4 lights, wire the motor direct and wire the lights off the wall switch. Also if you really wanted you could just hook up a remote control to run the fan. There are lots of different options.

Thanks for the comments Don. The fan will be going in a sun room - I will see how it works out. One concern I have is that even on low speed, the blades turn pretty fast and pushes a lot of air. Second speed is faster than the first but there doesn't seem to be much difference between 2 and 3. I agree with you that most likely I will find a speed and leave it there

I don't think those remotes will work with the shaded pole fans, you need a 5amp variable control. I have a sidewinder that has a 6" globe fitter on the bottom. You can remove the switch and jump the hot wires if need be.

Ed, unless you have two hot wires and a neutral from the wall box to the ceiling box, a wall speed control only would not just slow the fan, it would also dim the lights at the same time. Two hot wires will allow independent control of the fan and the lights from the wall box.

Look at the rope tubing and arms at GrandBrass.com. I usually bend the rope tubing around a pipe to get a large radius. Get a 1/4" IPT die (or NPT) to thread the tubing. You can also copper plate the brass parts and use liver of sulphur to oxidize them. An antique socket is best, as it is brass. New solid brass sockets have a plastic coating that you need to remove before plating. David, thanks for pointing me to those links. There are some amazing fans out there that gave me some ideas for adding lights to the sidewinder and refinishing some rough R-52's I have. I will save the links and review them many times. There are so many talented people in the AFCA that have been very gracious to share their knowledge and offer practical advice. It's a good thing I'm retiring next year - I'm going to need a lot of time to learn and work on these fans.
