I have also been watching this. Not sure if it fanflation, or if there is more money people can play with over the last 9 months.

As more and more people discover fan collecting, fan prices will continue to climb. I bought my first cake twenty years ago on Ebay and paid $201 dollars for it shipped from Vancouver. It was an '06 CGE and I still have it. I bought my first coin ops from a collector in 2002, and paid $250 each for three complete one speeds. With all the new collectors in the AFCA, I'd say they all want cakes and coin ops, along with any of the more desireable manufacturers. It's my opinion that the 1900 stick on Ebay is being run up by an inexperienced bidder or shill. While it is the last model of the nineteenth century, there is nothing unusual about it. Run of the mill F9 with spec of 12721. I wouldn't value it at more than $1250 and that's being generous. I think the fan belongs to one of our members.....

I smell a shill as well. Seems strange to have a very low feedback bidder keep bidding it up. Shame as this is being sold by a member.

Incredibly common for two bidders to bounce bids against each other. In fact low opening bids draw more interest and bidders can fight for it. A low feedback bidder does not imply a shill bidder account. There is no reason to assume seller is shilling his auction.

A low feedback bidder often translates to a inexperienced buyer. All impulse and no research.

For a country that’s in the financial crapper it sure seems like it’s a sellers market for EVERYTHING! Not real sure how that works. 🤷♂️ It only takes two people to have an auction. A friend of mine recently sold a beer can that he was expecting around $4000 for it. It sold for $13,000.

I happen to know the seller and I believe he wouldn't do shill bidding. If you look at the number of bids ,the leader has only one buy. Last edited on Wed Mar 31st, 2021 07:45 pm by Stephen Chew |

A lot of people believe in non-cash assets (I do too) but am not crazy. It's worked well for collectors for a long time. Someone always ends up buying the high though...

I have been socking away to get cake soon I hope I don't have to save $2K. I think attending a meet is my best bet. For the fan on eBay we are discussing it seems that some people are having a bidding war and one bidder (with 1 rating) really wants that fan. I've made the mistake myself of overpaying on eBay because I was determined to win the auction and forgot to worry about getting a reasonable deal. I think people get caught up in the excitement of the auction. Also, that cake could be bid up to any high amount but if the winner of the auction doesn't pay the seller that amount it is never actually sold at that price. Buyers back out all the time on eBay after winning the auction. Backing out may get you one bad rating but that's all you can lose really. My opinion is that eBay can give you an idea on value or how to price a fan but shouldn't be the end all determining factor.

The guy I was bidding against must of had a higher final bid so when I bid, it showed that he just over bid me. I probably put 6 or 7 bids in until I was the leader😀

Good Luck, I hear crickets on my 1908 BMY as well - - might try the auction route - - shipping is a great risk - the 1901 Cake I shipped arrived damaged - - I have 2 fans now lost by FedEx

Also could be a bidder like me who hit the brown & woke up the next day with the winning bid, I paid $1600 for a 1901 12 years ago . . . could have cancelled, but I wanted the fan, my first cake.

I've been at this fan thing for a decade and like others, have been socking away for a Pancake. I'd thought I could get one in operating condition for $900+/-... looks like that won't be happening at current prices. The SAC is an understanding woman, but going north of $1000 for a fan... I don't want to have that conversation. "I know, but honey!!..."
