This old gal needs all new wiring, perhaps a motor re-wind, can the antique speed coil be replaced with some new solid state gadget? Blade was making contact with the "lollipop", blade seems fine - tight tolerances - - that brass wire that holds the disc can rotate, I can see why few of these survived. Ran few a few seconds then hummed.

There are not very many ways to control the speed of an induction motor. As far as a "new solid state gadget," it would have to be an inverter, and it would need to be fitted to the switch in such a way that the original lever, sans wooden knob, would control it. I don't immediately see that as a viable option. The old "tried and true" rewinding of the speed coil (and motor, if needed) is the best way out, the way I see it. Are you looking to have the fan reworked?

Nichrome wire tower can be re-wrapped. Fan probably has other issues and may need to be totally gone through.

What you said James - - 1907 wiring, will need a complete mechanical restoration, otherwise just a wall hanger. I have seen them run, it is really wild! Plus worth it.

I cleaned the switch contacts & it runs great!! No blade shake at all, now to adjust the "Lollipop" mechanism. Even speed 1 is crazy fast, using a VARIAC.

Getting a new bearing, if necessary, would only help. Lollipops are worth the trouble.

He used to do it. But you'll have to contact him to see what's in his inventory now. I don't know what he currently has in stock. Not sure how you're going to get to the bearing without removing the stator and completely rewiring the fan if it has original 100-year-old wiring. Insulation may disintegrate when you start maneuvering things ... something to consider.

Yohii Wirewound Resistors 100 Watt 20 Ohm Aluminum Case Chassis Mounted Resistor ( these are sold on Amazon) using just one will reduce the speed about the same as a factory setting, Put them in serious to slow it down even more.. they work great on ac induction motors..
