Hey Nick,

Know what would look really awesome? Polish those big aluminum blades to a mirror finish. I did it with the 30" blades (elephant ears) on my Emerson pedestal and the compliments keep coming!

The GE colors were done in powder coating--Mirror White and Candy Red. Just wanted something different. :D

Hey Nick, I'm happy to help. Remember, there are 500 ways of doing something so this is what worked for me. I don't want to start an avalanche of snarky replies letting me know that I did a procedure incorrectly. That said, here goes:

My Emerson blade was in tough shape. It was made around 1945 and I'm sure no one ever polished it. After removing crud with Dawn dishwashing liquid, I used Prism Polish (available locally and on Amazon). This is the best I've found for my needs. I've also used Meguiar's but always go back to Prism. I do a small area at a time and put the polish on a paper towel and start to rub it into the aluminum. You'll need to change the towel frequently because it turns black after only a few rubs. Then I finish it with a microfiber towel. It took me about 3 tries per section but the blade did get the result I wanted. Nothing like seeing spinning mirrors!

Set screw problem: Been there, done that. I used a screw extractor (also known as an easy-out) and threaded it into the allen opening. A little turning and out came the screw. Of course, the screw had to be replaced but the internal threads of the hub were fine.

I'm not an expert on anything so you use own good judgment when working on a project. If you do the blade polishing, post a picture of the final result!

Nick, until your last posting, I had no idea what a mud wasp nest was so I learned something from you.

With any fan I get, I always check the condition of the external wiring. If it's cracked or really hard/brittle, it gets replaced. If it's wet when I get it, I dry everything out before connecting and then proceed with testing. Get a continuity tester (you can get a cheapie at Harbor Freight for $4), and check for grounds. It's all a matter of staying safe with any vintage appliance.

Mud daubers are a fact of life with old stuff.  I deal with a lot of "barn sitters" and they always have at least one nest.  I would be disappointed if I didn't find them;^)

It is just mud.  They don't chew wires.  Other that a little dirt, no harm is done.

Ken, my church has a 24' emerson pedestal and the blades were never polished but they cleaned up nice. We had that fan when i was a kid there and goes back to the early 50's> i got a RM Zephair 24" and polished the blades like mirrors with Mothers Aluminum Mag Wheel Polish from the Auto parts store. That fan is at church too, and was great for a free prize ! keep up the good work!.

You sure can.  It is amazing what can be done with a buffer and aluminum (not by me).

nick, i saw that one on ebay. i had one but sold it, also in the box, a country aire. I went to our recycling center one day and there it was in the box with an early 50's chelsea window fan....We have a section called the "Secondhand shack" where people leave good things for others to take free. Yours has a GE motor. This looks like what people calle the "fireball" motor, but this one you have is just a single direction three speed yes? in which case it is not a mix of aluminum and copper wire which is the fault of the 3 speed reversible motor. The one you have came as a 2 speed and 2 speed reversible motor but looked the same on the outside. Try to avoid hustling the fan and box around in the attic and during use as the weak spot is where the wiring harness attaches to the windings. They used little metal connectors inside a plastic sleeve and the wire can break there from vibration and being banged around.... be gentle or you have to take the motor apart and try and reconnect. I have fixed many for that fault, but have two of the 3 speed reversibles and you cant get a connection to the aluminum wiring (they coated it with orange epoxy so it looks copper but isnt) very frustrating. nice fan, keep it oiled too...
