New member with a few questions.  I have a Westinghouse Mobilaire Fan (cat no 16MA2 and Part Y-4695) with a 4 blade fan, round motor, and a large start capacitor.  From pictures and a wiring diagram of the same model fan on this web site, I THINK my fan is supposed to have two speeds.  However, my fan has NO SPEED SWITCH and NO ON/OFF SWITCH.   I simply plug/unplug the power cord as needed.  It always starts instantly, is very quiet, and runs great as a single speed fan.

My questions are:
1) Was this maybe an early model that had only one speed and no on/off switch  or is this model/part number fan really a two speed model that has been modified?  (By my stupid older brother! document.write('');)

ASSUMING, my fan is really a two speed model:

2) The wiring diagram I found shows a resistor between the low/high switch poles.  Anyone know what value this should be?

3) The wiring diagram shows the start capacitor.  Any idea what the specs?  (uf and voltage?)

4) If I wanted to replace the switch with an original model, does anyone know where I could buy original parts (or modern parts that will fit)?

5) Where/how should the switch be mounted?  Anyone have a picture of the mounted switch?

Thank You for any information!

the switch gets mounted to the rear grille lower center. It is a 2 speed fan. I don't have the wiring expertise though without having a correct one in front of me. it would depend if originally that had the rotary-small turn switch, or the leveloir switch which the hex motors had....

I'm pretty sure it was a small (3/4" to 1" long) rotary switch.  Based on what I found on this web site and looking how my fan currently wired, I'm sure I could replace the switch with a three position (LO-OFF-HI) toggle switch from Radio Shack and just mount it in the back grate.  However, to get the low speed, I need to know the TYPE, RESISTANCE, MAX WATTAGE of the resister the goes between the LO switch pole and the HI pole.

Does anyone know have that information?

Also, does anyone have an assembly drawing for the motor?  When I itook the motor apart, two of the phenolic washers were split and broke apart.  OR know where I could get replacement washers?

here is a thread i started some time a go about one of those mobile aire fans, I purchased a new motor for mine from a AFCA member & have been running the fan since.
mine was originally the tan/ brown color -- but i like the green, do  re paint it would have been a time consuming undertaking-- so i just cleaned & installed the new motor & the thing is purring along!! It is the first garage stored fan back in our house this spring!!moves air & very quiet, plus it just has a look about it!!
I saved the old motor /switch  if you need parts--- also i'm looking for info on the capacitor there is a thread somewhere. Lawrence

Hi Jack!

This link http://www.afcaforum.com/view_topic.php?id=28161&forum_id=5&highlight=mobilaire shows the 3 way toggle switch installed from Ace Hardware. (Of course, can be had in many places easily.) You may find other parts of the link useful as well. Replacement Capacitor was 2.5MFD, 250V AC.

Little slow on this reply, can help with your missing "resistor" question some. The following photos will show the low speed Nichrome Resistance Wire used originally. (Available On Line) From external measured dimensions, I estimated the total length to be around 6' and ohmed out at exactly 22 ohms. The wattage should be around 45W. I did not get the actual diameter. Naturally you must pay attention to "how" and "What" the Nichrome wires mounts to due to high heat dissipation.

Low Speed: 1.45A  139W  .80PF (Power Factor)
High Speed: 1.53A  123W .67PF

You can also set the fan to High and use a Variable Transformer (Variac) to control the speed more efficiently than the Nichrome Wire. Love the fan, but hate the inherent "Waste" built into its design when using Low Speed.

Sounds like you are wll on your way, best of luck with your project. When finished, you will find it a very good air mover and oh so quiet. The cool look is a bonus.:P

I'll check back when I get more time and can review my photos of the restoration is other question arise...

I have got my Mobilair 100% disassembled/cleaned are ready for painting.

However, when I removed the stator from the motor shell, the old wires broke off and now there is only two inches left.  I can easily solder new wires to the old BUT I can't tell the wire colors because ALL the remaining wires are blackened.  I did use a meter and found the following:
W1 to W2 = 107 ohms
W1 to W3 = 87 ohms
W2 to W3 = 20 ohms

If I follow the wiring diagram below, does anyone know which wire (W1, W2,and W3) is the YELLOW, GREEN, RED in the picture?
