After cleaning and re-lube my Vortalex Oscillating Electrical Fan F12V163As, I noticed the motor seemed very warm to touch. After 30 minutes on high with the blade , my infrared thermometer shows 137 degrees F. I know the motors do heat up, but Is 137 normal? I did not check before starting the restoration, so maybe it has always been that way.

I have a 16" Vortalex F12V163, and after running it for about 30 minutes, it is so hot that it will burn my hand off after 3 seconds. The next worst fan I have, I can keep my hand on it infinitely, but it is pretty hot and very uncomfortable. I guess if all the 16" Vortalexes do this, it must be ok to use them. I do think they run warm but I must be just lucky. Once I get done cleaning up my fans, I do a series of exams one of which is a 30 minutes temp test of the hottest part of the motor housing I can find (normally that's the top which makes sense). Three of my vortalex fans measured as follows: 1. 49X942 9" Desk = 96 degrees 2. 49X942B 9" Desk = 96.2 degrees 3. 78X186 9" Stand = 102 degrees These are all first generation Vortalex from around 1938-41 and, as noted, all 9" models. I don't think that matters but I mention it just in case. My remaining Vortalex 10" is non-functioning because I made an early mistake and tried to pull the stator to put a new headwire on, bending the housing in the process. So it's room temperature. LOL. The Vortalex Fans are Shaded Pole Motors (except the 16" models and the 24" Pedestals and the first generation 12" models which are PSC Motors) and most Shaded pole motors get pretty hot to the touch because they are inefficient motors, the 12" shaded pole motors get between 105-140 degrees Farenheit.
