I don't have any fans that take this particular switch but I've always wondered how the handle was isolated from the electrical current with the whole thing being metal.
If you wired the neutral to the center of the switch and the hot to the stator, then you should be OK, at least by 1920's standards. Neutral rarely gets above a volt or two.
