Hello Folks,

I just wanted to share this with all of you.
A friend of mine asked me to restore his Western Electric fan as you see in the picture. I could not remove the motor from the steel housing, it was too tight. I was able to at least clean and spray insulating varnish on it. I also managed to replace the head wire from outside. I polished the brass hardware and added some more to "pimp" the beauty!!!

My friend Erich and one of AFCA members did a fantastic job replacing a cracked blade and a missing cage wire. He also balanced the blades to perfection with his new customized adapted "blade balancer" - interesting "toy" if I may say!! I think the fan runs and looks great!!!

Nothing like team work folks!!!

I hope you like it!!

Thanks

Fatima

Are the bearing housings brass plated? I've never seen one that wasn't pot metal.. Neat fan!

No it's original. I just stripped the paint off and there it was - pure rough brass on both sides. I spent a long time polishing it to make it smooth. Then I clear coated the whole fan, except the blades and cage.

Sorry but I just got that fan. :P

I can see why it is your favorite fan though, I love it! Still waiting on my rotor and bearing to be repaired but hopefully that is soon so I can enjoy it. Hope you find one as well, they are excellent fans.

looks like I'll be scraping a little paint off the bottom of each one I have looking for brass.. Screw originality! That looks cool!

Where did you get the brass grommets?

At a hardware store near me called OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware). You can also find them at " Jo Ann fabrics and crafts", but the ones from the hardware store are more suitable.

If it was my fan, I would have done it in black instead of "Stainless Steel" color. I think black makes the brass stand out more. I am thinking about buying one and restoring it the same way, but in black.

Do you have a picture of the grommet by itself by chance? I'll have to go pick up a couple hundred of those!

Here they are!!

I used the 5/16" brass grommets on the Western fan. I bent them a little so they would fit and follow the base curve perfectly.

I also clear coated the grommets before gluing them to the base, so they stay shinny and beautiful.

I put a lot of work in this fan and I am tempted to buy another one to restore in 'black". I just hope to find one with the brass caps/endings under the original paint.

I have to make Kim Frank happy !!!

Cheers folks!!!

NICE restoration, SWEET can-motor! I have seen some stampie oscillators with brass trannies too. Even later oscillators often have brass caps on the oscillating transmission. My old 6-wing stationary can-motor has the brass front and rear bearing housings, but as the fan is NOS, I will leave it totally stock. But if I get another Fatima, I am going your route on restoration...what a beautiful fan! Neat idea!

I stock many of those thinner brass grommets here at my graphics shop. Use them on banners all the time. Never thought to use them on a fan. They are not quite as nice as the thicker machined bling Kim makes but if anyone wants a couple let me know. I might see how one polishes up on the buffer. I have a few different sizes. I generally get a bag of 1000 at a time.

Where did you get the brass grommets?

the're solid brass, and the're common on the early Westys stanped steel with the centrifical start.

they were used on both the stationary and oscillator, and both 12" and16". I have

4, one of each.

Do you think my fan is like that also? I have a westly just like that except is 6 blade model.  The inside threads where the oil cup goes look to be brass

Assuming you are speaking of rotor/shaft damage, it depends on how well the fan was taken cared of. I have come across many antique fans that have an excellent shaft and bearings.

Actually I was talking about the back cover like in the fan thats pictured and I checked and mine is brass! :D The owner before me had painted over it with black paint and if it wasn't for that pic I wouldn't have known it was soild brass under there. I'm removing the paint now to restore it back to orignal. :D

But "original" was with black paint on the brass. Westinghouse probably never let these fans out with bare brass showing on the front and rear bearing carriers.

My bad, thanks Steve. I personally like the brass look though so even if its not orginal like I thought it was to have the brass exposed I'm gonna keep it that way. :)

Nice work Fatima,
Didn't know Brazilians also get infected with the "Fan Bug" but apparently do. My wife is from Curitiba,Parana. In fact, she and my daughter are leaving this wednesday for Brasil for a few weeks. Still summer down there.
I think you have given me some ideas on how to restore a R&M 3804 I just acquired although it does have great patina and pretty good original paint.

Thanks Michael!
It was a lot of work to restore this fan. I spent some serious time polishing the brass parts and trying to remove the motor from it's house.
So your wife is Brazilian - that's great! I hope you have been in Brazil especially in "Florianopolis". You have to go there!! It's PARADISE.

Let me know if you need any help with your fans.

Please stay in touch.

Thanks

Fatima

I think I used a smaller size grommet where the head wire is. I can't remember for sure... I don't have the fan anymore.
I attach more pictures for you.

Let me know if you need me to pick up the grommets for you.

good luck!
