This is an old fan in at best fair condition. Dusty and a little rusty inside. Runs good but it's started what I think is a bearing/bushing squeal. Box has been repainted and is 20" x 20" x 6.5". Removed the front and back grills from their clips. Fan is about 18" in diameter and may be made of black plastic or possibly Bakelite. It covers the motor like a bullet head/shroud and appears to be secured to the end of the motor shaft with a large Philips head screw. I tried to remove the screw but the head started to strip so I quit, sprayed it with WD-40 and regrouped. On each side of the screw about 5/8" center to center are two holes maybe 3/16" dia. Hoped that they might be oiling holes but probing with a small screwdriver and flashlight indicates they are threaded and appear to have bottoms. The fan surface around each hole is slightly recessed looking to be for round screw heads. Hoping somebody here has experience with this type of fan construction and knows an easy way to lube it? Already have a can of 3 In One 20 SAE for electric motors. Otherwise what's the best way to approach removing the blades to get at the motor? If that's the fan that I think it is, it won't have oil ports because it is a ball bearing motor and you may be looking at some trickery to get in there, or even possibly be facing replacement of the bearings if they're stuck or worn and noisy. Someone here has one of those, I just don't remember who...

If its not a ball bearing motor then there will be a hole in the blade where it goes back to where the bearing sits behind the shaft that the blade is attached to. You'll need a bottle of zoomspout with the long tube for this job as you have to line up that hole in the blade with the oil hole in the motor. It will be a lot easier if you can get the blade off and I would crack open the motor and physically put oil in the rear bearing to make sure its lubed.

I am sure Ray Hane and I went back and forth on issues with that fan years back and I honeslty cant remember what he said. I had a Dual Aire floor fan, and never figured out how the heck you could get the blade off without ruining it and Ray said it was very difficult. As an alternative maybe you could try taking the motor and blade out as a unit. and lay it blade down and remove the rear motor cover and try unit lube from that way with the blade still on the shaft. just a thought

That was my original plan B. As you can see from the picture the mounting bar is electrowelded to the case and the motor mounts have smooth heads facing outward. The shroud prevents access from the inside. But (see next post) Attached Image (viewed 1384 times):

I just got one of these from my girlfriend when she found it at a yard sale for like 3 bucks. Its the very same model just that mine is the rollair model. This model came out in 1959 and ran till like 1961 or 1962. The blade comes off by unscrewing that screw in the middle. The screw is reverse threaded. When taking the blade off there should be a bushing that rides on the shaft. This might be damaged and was a weak point for this fan. Without this bushing the blades are loose on the shaft. The motor should be a standard box fan motor probably from Westinghouse. I would like to find a way to fix the blade bushing problem. Right now I jerry rigged some plumbing washers and bushings with a nylon spacer on the shaft which works but not as great as when it was new.

they sure don't make it easy to maintain those fans! if it is a westy box fan motor then it is oil and not ball bearing for sure
