Hi Guys. Picked up an R & M List 2610 with a fried/burnt speed coil. Would like to find a replacement before I send it off to Rick Huckabee for a rewind. Anyone got one that they would part with? The rest of the fan is coming along but it's no good without a good choke coil.  Repainted the badge and motor tag too

Hi David. Don’t know if there’s a difference but you posted for a 2610 coil and the fan is a 2410. May be the same but wanted to help avoid any problems. Good luck, it’s looking nice!

same coil - - I thought we were using those bridge rectifier diodes to bypass bad coils? I have a pile of them if anybody needs them - - got 300 when I ordered 30

Steve: How do I use a diode to bypass the bad coil? Sounds like an interesting solution. How does that work exactly?

David,About 40 years ago my wife came home after visit antique stores and came home with a 2410. I remember because she wouldn’t carry it in, I had to get it. Back then I liked fans but was busy working and other stuff. So I sprayed the blades gold and the fan black. It stayed that way until last year about this time. As Covid spread and staying at home was encouraged, (I’m retired now) I started restoring the fans I have. So it got a complete facelift. Photo to follow

  David, I’m not equipped to polish brass, no buffing wheel here. I found a plater/polisher locally and he did the brass work. He didn’t know to save the black features of the badge and motor tag. But it has all 3 speeds and runs very good. Enjoy your 2410. I did all the other elements of the restore

Looks pretty nice to me Malcolm. Painting badges and motor tags is not terribly difficult. It takes patience but you can do it if you’ve a mind to do it.

What makes you feel the coil is fried? Often, R&Ms get dirty connections where the coil wires connect to the switch. I remove the nuts and washers, and polish them or sand them with fine sandpaper until shiny copper. Then, straighten the coil wire loops that went around the switch screws, sand the wires until shiny, and reassemble. You can re-lacquer the coil by giving it a heavy spray of clear Sprayon electrical varnish. You can also put a wrap of cloth electrical tape (friction tape) around the coil and varnish it again.

This was for a 2 speed fan, not sure about the larger 3 speed models

Hi Dave. That's exactly what I did. I re-insulated the coil. I'm getting good separation between high and low but not much difference between medium and high.

Sometimes old fans do this. Some blame it on higher voltages (120 vs 110). Some guys rewind speed coils with extra turns to make the speeds more distinct. If you like your fan to run super slow, you can run it off of a KB speed control. Early (non capacitor) AC induction motors can’t be slowed down very well with just a speed coil.
