Looking to buy a stroboscope to help me balance blades on my growing collection. Let me know if you have one you are willing to part with or if there is an inexpensive option out in the marketplace. I’ve tried the iPhone app, but find the flash to be inconsistent. PM me if you have one to sell or post reply to the forum if you have advice that others might find useful. Bill

I got one from 1963 on eBay for $50. Maybe check there. If you don’t have any luck pm me, I might be willing to part with mine. I’ve found using a prop balancer much easier.

Thanks. I saw that one but it says it’s not working and for parts only. I would trust one coming from a member knowing it been successfully used for balancing fan blades.

One serves one purpose, the other serves another purpose. With a strobe you can spot an out of clock blade, and you can get all the wings uniform traveling within the same plane. With the prop balancer you can eliminate vibration caused by a heavy wing which will drop to the bottom.

I purchased one from John McComas in past that I am most pleased with. It is an Ametek DIGITAL read out strobe. The digital feature is a peach being you can clock blade RPM. Once this is achieved, you can double/triple the initial blade RPM to freeze the blade with 2 sets of wings overlapping.....4 sets of wings overlapping...etc. and really fine tune that blade to run smooth as silk. You just need to learn the tricks. ![]() Attached Image (viewed 299 times): Last edited on Sat Aug 14th, 2021 05:20 am by Russ Huber |

Russ Huber wrote: Jon Kovach wrote:Thanks Russ that is helpful! I’ve learned that having the blades in clock is key to a smooth running blade. It’s the first thing I true up when balancing a blade. The blade being in clock seems to be the most important thing to correct when working on blades for me. Pitch can be off and the fan won’t hop across the floor like when it’s out of clock.I got one from 1963 on eBay for $50. Maybe check there. A stroboscope that works is definitely what you need. I got a decent one but took a chance on buying on eBay. I had some luck with mine after reading this article. https://www.fancollectors.org/info/balancing.htm
