I picked up a nice condition Emerson 77646-AL fan with what I think is a switch issue. The guy that had it said it immediately trips the breaker upon moving the switch. He said prior to that it always ran very well but he would have to play with the switch a little to get it to come on, it never overheated or showed any signs of a motor issue and the blades spin smoothly with a finger push. He said it just eventually started tripping when you moved the switch. The switch feels a little lose to me, it doesn't click through the speeds much, more glides over. It looks to me like somone previously changed the cord but the internal wiring looks pretty decent though the wiring to the sealed box (capacitor?) looks tobe cloth coveredwith the cloth ridingup thewiress slightly. So probably somone has messed with the wiring before. I haven't opened the motor up yet. Figured I'd open the botom and make sure there was nothing simple like a worn wire or lose connection before anything else. Attached Image (viewed 511 times):

If the capacitor is not mounted in the correct position, the switch arm can touch the capacitor connections and short circuit. You might consider replacing the "sardine can" PCB oil capacitor with a smaller Mylar film model available on eBay or Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Tnisesm-Capacitor-CBB61-Ceiling-TN-CBB61-1-5/dp/B0876LRRJJ/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1X38D6TY5RFW6&dchild=1&keywords=1.5uf+capacitor&qid=1634013772&sprefix=1.5uf%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-5 ![]() Happy Fanning!
