I am restoring a 1952 Emerson Electric 74646-AL Hassock fan. When I turn the switch the thing hums but is locked up solid. When I attach the power cord directly to the motor it runs fine. So the problem is either the switch or this part:  What exactly is this? It’s got three wires coming off it, all cloth covered with a single thin copper wire inside. That’s your speed coil. Not likely to be causing your motor to lock up. That’s generally caused by lack of oil, the wrong oil, or worn bearings. Does the blade spin freely and coast to a stop when spun by hand?

Yes. When the fan is turned off, the blade spins freely. When you turn it on, the blade is locked up. Feels magnetically.

If you’re holding the hassock on it’s side, that could be why. Otherwise it’s likely a very worn bearing, allowing the rotor to pull toward one side of the stator.

Nope. Motor is perfectly vertical. When I hook up the motor and turn it on the rotor latches onto one side of the magnetic coil and won’t let go. Before I took the whole thing apart, when I attached the power cord directly to the motor it ran fine but when hooked up through the switch it would lock up. After cleaning it and putting it all back together, it now locks up whenever under power from the switch or directly.

It sounds like what Lane said, bad bearing or the bearing fell out of its retainer while you were working on it. Could also be you have the stator cocked to one side so the rotor isn't centered.

When powered it pulls the rotor toward one side of the stator opening instead of being centered, causing it to be magnetically attracted to the stator at that spot, thus locking it.

Hmm. Unfortunately, the bearings and rotor are welded to one half of the exterior in this model. Not sure how I’d fix this.

A friend of mine from church gave me one of these fans (the one I had was a 1955 model year one) and that one I had some issues with but got them resolved.
